THOMAS G. MORIARTY
August 15, 1971 – February 25, 2023
Brookhaven, NY
Thomas G. Moriarty, of Shoreham, NY entered into eternal rest on February 25, 2023 at Brookhaven Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Far Rockaway, NY. He was 51 years old.
The son of Gregory Moriarty and his wife Rosemarie and Rosalie (Zagami) Moriarty Martens and her husband Richard, Thomas was born on August 15, 1971 in Port Jefferson, NY.
In addition to his parents, Thomas is survived by his sisters: Christine (Moriarty) Cleeves and her husband Charles of New Windsor, NY and Kathryn (Moriarty) Ryan and her husband Thomas of Central Valley, NY; nieces: Macayla Cartwright, Madison Cleeves; and nephews: Gregory Cleeves, Timothy, Michael and Christopher Ryan.
The family would like to thank life-long friends Serina Cocchia Smith, Ed and Pam Grafer along with the many others who showed Tommy what unconditional friendship truly meant. “I’m not interested in whether you stood with the great. I’m interested in whether you sat with the broken.”- unknown.
A family statement reads: Tom was a lover of the ocean. His surname Moriarty means “navigator” or “sea-worthy.” If he could’ve spent all of his time here on earth exploring the seven seas, he would’ve been a happy man. He loved to fish and spend time with his friends laughing around boats and boating docks. He had a love for all things with a motor and spent his younger days fiddling in the garage with his father rebuilding tractor, car and motorcycle engines. When Tom wasn’t in the garage, he and his buddies enjoyed outrunning the police on his many motorcycle escapades.
As Tom grew older, you could find him behind a bar-b-que grilling up steaks, ribs and burgers to perfection. Perfection meant a beautiful “medium rare”. You were a heathen should you request your meat “medium” or God-forbid, “well-done”! Tom didn’t have much in the way of worldly possessions. What he did have was a quick wit, a fierce loyalty to family and friends and a need to help those less fortunate than himself. He once gave a homeless man his last dollar stating that he himself, at least, had a roof over his head. Tom didn’t worry much about his own health, however he often worried about and checked in on his sick and sad friends. Many spoke to me about the way he stood up for those who couldn't stand up for themselves. He didn’t tolerate negative talk against family, friends and others who were battling hard times. That was Tom in a nutshell, a man of small stature with a heart too big for this world. Tom lived and died on his terms. Although his choices left us all here in his wake, please picture Tommy out on the ocean taking his loved ones who passed before him, on the most beautiful of sea cruises. Thank you all for loving Tom. He’ll be waiting on the dock for you.
In Tom’s memory his family asks that you perform a small act of kindness towards a stranger, visit with old friends and take the time to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. We always think we have more time.
