Obituary for Richard M. Miles

RICHARD M. MILES
February 13, 1953 – April 11, 2023
Cornwall, NY

Richard M. Miles, of Cornwall, NY entered into eternal rest on April 11, 2023 at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, NY, after a long struggle with his health. He was 70 years old.

The son of the late Robert N. Miles and Catherine A. (Florentine) Miles, Richard was born on February 13, 1953 in Newburgh, NY.

Richard was a retired Transportation Supervisor for the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. After 31 years at West Point, he chose to keep working where he then took on a part-time position at the Cornwall Central School District and was the Food Service Courier delivering the school lunches to all the Cornwall Schools. He did that for 14 years and totally loved every day of it. When he finished his daytime work, he worked alongside his wife at night, as he helped her with the commercial end of their Cleaning Business.

He was an active member of the Cornwall United Methodist Church, 198 Main Street, in Cornwall, NY (which is now called Hope United Methodist Church) where he served in several ministries of the church, such as The Healing Ministry. He also served on committees, such as Trustees & Council Chair. He sang in the choir, and he loved playing his guitar in the Praise Band that was formed with his wife and 2 other members of his church, and would provide the music in the healing ministry once a month, as well as play in part of the worship service. He loved when their Praise Band, which they called “Visions of Praise” would be asked to play at some Christian coffeehouses in other churches. In the summer months, he helped Betty with Vacation Bible School.

Music was always the love of his life since he was 8 years old when he first learned how to play the guitar, as a young person he continued to play his guitar any chance he got. He was in a rock band with his friends as a teenager and had a lot of fun.

After meeting John Cubito, who was his best friend's brother, they played together for many years in different places. Rich and John wrote songs together back in the 1980's and he was even involved with putting a CD together with John.

When he was set up on a blind date in 1985, that is when he met his wife, Betty. He always said it was “Love at first sight”. Little did he know, she would become the love of his life, along with her 2 sons, Erik and Gary, who were only 4 and 6 years old at the time. They immediately became the best thing that ever happened to him, since he didn’t have any children of his own. One of his favorite things to do was spending time with them and Betty. He became immediately involved in their lives when Betty joined her 2 sons in the Boy Scouts of America. Rich and Betty later started their own Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop in 1987, with 2 of their close friends which is where he supported and followed both of his stepsons straight to Eagle Scouts. After 38 years, Troop 206 and Pack 6 still exist today.

After having a long courtship of 11 years, Betty finally said “I do”, and they married on October 5, 1996 at the Cornwall United Methodist Church. He became one of the best stepfathers any child could have, along with being a wonderful grandfather to his 3 grandchildren, Jacob, Brandon, and Kaitlyn, who were the apple of his eye.

If you had the opportunity to know him, he was a kind, compassionate person, a loving and devoted husband, stepfather, grandfather, and friend. I was truly blessed to be his wife. He was loved by many and he will be missed greatly!

Richard is survived by his loving wife: Elizabeth “Betty” A. (Morina) Miles at home; his sons: Gary L. Albaugh of Newtown, PA and Erik J. Albaugh of Long Beach, CA; and his 3 grandchildren: Jacob F., Brandon M. and Kaitlyn M. Albaugh of Milford, PA. In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his brothers: John and Robert Miles.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13th. at Hope United MEthodist Church, 198 Main Street, Cornwall, NY. A Fellowship luncheon will follow the Service.

Memorial Contributions can be made to the Hope United Methodist Church, 198 Main Street, Cornwall, NY 12518 in memory of Richard M. Miles.
