Obituary for Norma I. Gonzalez

NORMA I. GONZALEZ
December 4, 1946 – February 22, 2024
New Windsor, NY

Norma I. Gonzalez, of New Windsor, NY entered into eternal rest on February 22, 2024 at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY. She was 77 years old.

The daughter of the late Urbano Alicea and Rosalia (Borrero) Alicea, Norma was born on December 4, 1946 in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Norma was retired from Varsity Transit then worked as a Dispatcher with Pioneer Transportation for the New York City Public School System.

Affectionately called “Nickie” by all who knew and loved her, she hasn’t changed much from that little girl who arrived in the Bronx from Puerto Rico in the early fifties with a strong character and full of sass. She was a neat freak and fiercely protective of the “things” she collected over the years. She was a proud, hard-working woman who loved dressing up even if just to go to the grocery store. Her hair had to be just right and never a day without her lipstick, her jewelry, and her purse. She had a presence you just couldn’t ignore, not that she would let you. What she will be most remembered for would be her strength, her dedication to her Family, her confidence, and, of course, her parties on Elder.

Diagnosed with an array of ailments including Scleroderma almost 50 years ago, she refused to succumb to what she learned was Mixed Connective Tissue Disease. Though she was frail and delicate on the inside, she camouflaged her fragility with a tough outer shell. Her determination and strength pulled her through countless “close calls’. She was a fighter. She will be missed greatly.

In addition to her parents; her brothers: Ruben and Johnny Martinez; her sisters: Migdalia Maisonet, Judith Sierra; and many other friends and family members, Norma was preceded in death by her beloved husband: Robert “Bobby” Gonzalez in April of 2017. She is survived by her loving children: Nadeen (Gonzalez) Tuzo and her husband Hector Tuzo and Linda Gonzalez and her husband Jeffrey Sininsky; and by her granddaughters: Megan Velez and Nadia Tuzo. Her surviving siblings include Marta Roman, Sylvia Hernandez, Ada Hernandez and Zulma Pacitti.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 4th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson St. Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. Family Reflections will begin at 7:00 p.m. A joint Committal Service for both Norma and Robert with Military Honors will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 5th at Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, NY.

Memorial Contributions in Norma’s name may be made to The Scleroderma Research Foundation, 220 Montgomery Street, Suite 484, San Francisco, CA 94104.
