John C Steinberg, Jr. of Cornwall, NY passed away at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh, NY on April 5th, 2023. He was 90 years old.

The son of the late John Christian Steinberg, Sr. and Isis Mary (Kinser) Steinberg, John was born on September 2, 1932 in Centerville, IA.

John was raised in Short Hills, NJ and attended Stanford University where he received a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He played football at Stanford, became All American and played for Stanford in the 1952 Rose Bowl. He was drafted into the NFL and played 6 months for the NY Giants, before joining the US Army, serving in Huntsville, AL.

While serving in the Army, John worked with Wernher von Braun in the intermediate-range ballistic missile program. John applied to Harvard, received a letter of recommendation from von Braun and graduated from the Harvard Business School in 1960.

John had a successful career as a Residential General Contractor/Developer. He is best known in the area as owner of Schoonmaker Home, developing communities throughout Orange County and the Hudson Valley. John was a member of the NY State Home Builders Association, where he served as President for several years. He was a 30 year volunteer with the Orange County Industrial Development Agency, where he advocated for businesses of all sizes to come to Orange County, ultimately bringing jobs and families to the area.

In his spare time and in retirement, John enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, boating, skiing, fishing, relaxing at his vacation home in East Machias, ME and visiting with his college friends around the country. John was a fun loving, happy man. He always had a smile and a joke for anyone he met. The family hopes that everyone will share their fond memories of John.

John was predeceased by his loving wife, Ann L. (Robbins) Steinberg, and his sister Valeda (Steinberg) Slade. He is survived by his children: Leslie Gray and her husband Prentiss, Meredith Steinberg and her husband Lawrence Popino, John J. Steinberg and his wife Linda and Caroline Steinberg; his niece, Arietta Slade and her husband, Sam Felder: his grandchildren: Matthew, Zachary and Nathaniel Gray;
