Obituary for John H. Schoonmaker Jr.

JOHN H. SCHOONMAKER, Jr.
April 22, 1953 – November 17, 2022
Newburgh, NY

John H. Schoonmaker, Jr., of Newburgh, NY entered into eternal rest unexpectedly on November 17, 2022 at his home. He was 69 years old.

The son of the late John H. Schoonmaker, Sr. and Catherine (Urell) Schoonmaker, John was born on April 22, 1953 in Harrisburg, PA.

John earned his BA in Art History at the University of Rochester. While there he was awarded the Helena Rubinstein Fellowship at the Whitney Museum where he worked to assess the needs for disability access to cultural settings.

After his undergraduate work he pursued graduate studies at Bank Street School of Education in New York while working as Volunteer coordinator at The Asia Society. He subsequently relocated to California and Florida before returning to his Hudson Valley home in 2021.

John is greatly missed by his sisters and their families including many nieces and nephews whom he introduced to many cultural experiences and who relished his playful, caring spirit. Guided by his faith, and the teachings of the Course of Miracles in California where he was a co-leader, John had a love of people and reached out with a kind word or a helping hand.

“Losing someone you love is like losing part of yourself.
You miss them and you miss who you are with them.
Nothing will ever be the same.” (Author unknown)

John is survived by his sisters: Joanna R. (Schoonmaker) Boule of Plattsburgh, NY, Jane A. (Schoonmaker) Disare and her husband Richard of Cornwall, NY and Jeanne M. (Schoonmaker) Vlah and her husband Joseph of St. Augustine, FL;

As per his wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY.
