Obituary for Jean R. Murray (Quigley)

December 18, 1927 – August 18, 2023
Peekskill, NY formerly of Cornwall, NY

Jean Murray passed away on August 18, 2023. Born to Ruth and Eugene Quigley on December 18, 1927 at home in Manhattan.

Jean graduated from St. Ignatius Loyola High School and attended business school for one year. Her first job was at Lou Kirshman's Jewelers in Manhattan.

On September 18, 1947, she married the love of her life, Walter Murray. They moved to Astoria, Queens where they started their family. Jean made many lifelong friends there and reluctantly moved to Cornwall, NY. to be closer to her sisters. Leaving the city for the suburbs was difficult, but Jean and Walter were proud to purchase their first property in Cornwall, NY where Jean lived for over 50 years. Jean became fully involved in many organizations; the Cornwall Little League, Boy Scouts, P.T.O. and was active in several area Catholic Churches.

After many years as a stay-at-home mom, Jean sought out her next venture at Majestic Weaving, eventually she took on a very rewarding position at Stewart Air Force Base, as a day care worker. Parents were grateful for her dedication, and love to those in her care.

When her husband suffered a debilitating stroke, Jean became his full-time care giver. Through cajoling, patience and scolding she extended his life, years beyond the original prognosis.

Jean, fondly called Nana, took great pride in her grandchildren: Courtney Amanna, Brynn Dziewiatowski, Jared Dziewiatowski and Brianne O'Rourke. Years later Jean met her granddaughter: Lisa Rupert, who has been a blessing to all our lives.

Jean spent countless hours planning themed birthday parties, homemade Halloween costumes, and holiday gift packages. The packages continued into her grandchildren's adult lives.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, her parents and her three sisters: Anne Rappa, Peggy Truncale and Mickey Meagher Lewis. They were exceptionally close and loving, although Jean was met with eye rolls and occasional time outs when her very strong opinions were shared with her sisters. Advice on parenting, marriage, shopping and money to name a few were given freely whether solicited or not.

Jean was devasted by the unexpected death of her beloved son: Walter in 2019. Jean is survived by her daughter: Pamela Murray O'Rourke; her grandchildren; her great grandchildren: Adrieanna, Dominick, Sheridan, Lillian and Quinn; great great-grandchildren: Isaac, Carson and Jax; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 26th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. Graveside services following immediately at St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall.
