Obituary for Joan Ann Donnellan

Joan Ann Donnellan
JOAN ANN DONNELLAN
January 1, 1951 – January 2, 2018
Johns Island, SC

Joan Ann Donnellan, longtime resident of Cornwall-on Hudson, passed away suddenly at her home on Johns Island, SC on January 2nd, 2018. She was 67 years old.

Daughter of the late John and Margaret Donnellan, Joan was born in Brooklyn NY on January 1st, 1951. Joan married her husband of 42 years, Bill Ford, on June 28th, 1975 at St. Catherine of Genoa Church in Brooklyn NY.

Joan attended St. Brendan’s High School and later graduated from Marymount Manhattan College. She continued her education at New York University, pursuing a Doctorate of Sociology. Prior to completing her dissertation, Joan became more interested in teaching and instead earned her Master’s in Education and devoted her career to teaching students the joy of reading. Joan enjoyed a fulfilling career in the Newburgh school district and retired from Vails Gate Elementary School in 2013. Joan was currently volunteering with Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach on Johns Island, SC where she was a reading tutor to young, high-need students in the area. Joan was a lifelong scholar and true educator who had a passion and gift for teaching others and spreading her love of learning.

Joan’s other passion was her family who she loved with all her heart. She is survived by her loving husband, Bill Ford, and her three children: Colm Ford, Cathleen Ford Neal and her husband Justin Neal, and Clare Ford. She was the most loving wife and mother who built a home of comfort, laughter, and warmth. Joan was a devoted sibling and is survived by her dear sister Mary Donnellan Dean, and was preceded in death by her two older brothers, John and Peter Donnellan. Joan was a very special person who touched the lives of countless people with her generosity, compassion and selflessness and we know she will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing her.

Visitation will be held from 4pm to 8pm on Thursday, January 11th at Quigley Bros. Funeral home, 337 Hudson St. Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Friday, January 12th at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson NY 12520. Interment will follow at the St. Thomas cemetery in Cornwall, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in Joan’s name to Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach Program, PO Box 607, Johns Island, SC 29457.
